What is staff engineer?

A staff engineer is a senior individual contributor who works across teams, owning technical direction, architecture and hard problems without managing people.

The title marks the point where the engineering ladder splits: engineers who want to lead people become engineering managers, and engineers who want to lead technically become staff and then principal engineers. A staff engineer's impact is measured across the organisation, not within one team.

Companies often inflate the title to win a senior candidate, which creates a mismatch later. The honest test is scope: if the work is owning one team's codebase, the role is senior; if it is setting direction several teams follow, it is staff.

What is the difference between a senior engineer and a staff engineer?

Scope. A senior engineer owns and delivers within a team. A staff engineer sets technical direction across teams, unblocks the hardest problems and multiplies other engineers, and is paid accordingly.
