Paste an engineering, product or data job description and get a score with the specific fixes: the salary you did not state, the eleven requirements nobody matches, the clichés, the wording that leans one way. Nothing you paste leaves this page.

What good looks like

The job descriptions that fill fastest in our searches share a shape: a stated salary range, the working model in the first screen, five or six requirements you would genuinely reject on, a paragraph on what the first six months contain, and two lines on the interview process. Our guide to writing a job description for engineers covers the structure, and the salary benchmarks give you the range to put in it.

FAQ

About the checker.

What does the job description checker look for?

Nine things that are properties of the text itself: length, whether a salary or rate is stated, whether the working model (remote, hybrid, on-site) is stated, how many requirement bullets there are, years-of-experience demands, clichés such as rockstar or fast-paced, the balance of gender-coded words, whether the hiring process is described, and an approximate reading-ease score.

Where do the gender-coded word lists come from?

From Gaucher, Friesen and Kay (2011), "Evidence That Gendered Wording in Job Advertisements Exists and Sustains Gender Inequality", Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The checker counts words from their masculine-coded and feminine-coded lists and tells you which way an ad leans. In their studies masculine-coded wording reduced the appeal of a job to women; feminine-coded wording did not reduce it for men.

Is my job description stored or sent anywhere?

No. The analysis runs in your browser with JavaScript. The text is not uploaded, logged or sent to OpenSource or anyone else. If you then ask us for a salary benchmark, only the role title you confirm in that form is sent, with your details.

How is the score calculated?

Each check that fails or warns carries a fixed penalty, with the largest for a missing salary and a missing working model because those are the two filters candidates apply before reading anything else. The score is 100 minus the penalties. It is a checklist, not a prediction of how many people will apply.
