The State of New York Tech Hiring

New York closes out our market pulse series, after London, Berlin and Amsterdam, and it presents the sharpest version of the pattern the whole series has traced: record headline funding sitting on top of deliberately leaner hiring.

The best capital quarter since 2021, mostly for AI

New York startups raised $17.7 billion in the first half of 2026 across 504 deals, within sight of 2025’s full-year total, and Q2 alone brought in $8.88 billion, the city’s best quarter since 2021. The concentration is the story: around 35 per cent of that funding goes to AI companies, and the city now counts more than 2,000 AI startups and 35 AI unicorns, making New York the top US city for AI job postings.

For hiring plans, that cuts two ways. If you are an AI or data company, you are competing in the hottest talent market in the country for machine learning engineers with production experience. If you are not, the funding headlines overstate how crowded your own hiring lane actually is.

Funded, and still hiring leaner

The distinctive 2026 dynamic is that even well-funded New York startups are running leaner teams than the last boom, retooling operations around AI tooling and hiring fewer, more senior people to do it. Demand arrives as concentrated bursts: a funded Series A cohort in a single month was hiring for around 150 New York roles, but each company is hiring five engineers where the 2021 version would have hired fifteen.

That makes each individual hire heavier. When a team of five seniors is the plan, a mis-hire is a fifth of the engineering organisation, which is why scoped searches and genuinely technical screening matter more here than in any market we cover.

What pay actually looks like

Published figures put the average New York startup software engineer around $167,000 base, in a range running roughly $100,000 to $255,000, and senior engineers at the biggest firms reach a median total compensation near $240,000 once bonus and stock land. Those totals lean on big-tech packages. On our own placement bands for non-FAANG startup and scale-up base salaries, mid-level engineers sit at $120k–$150k, seniors at $150k–$200k and staff or principal engineers at $190k–$240k, detailed by role in our New York salary guide, with equity doing the work that headline totals do at the giants.

New York remains the highest-paying market we cover, roughly double London in dollar terms at the senior end. Budget each city on its own numbers, not a translation of the other.

What we would do this quarter

Decide whether you are in the AI lane or not, and set expectations accordingly: the same senior engineer is fielding very different offers depending on which lane is bidding. Build offers on current New York numbers, with equity framed honestly against the big-tech totals candidates can see on public data. And keep the process tight, because a lean team’s worth of hiring can be won or lost on speed alone; a fast, well-run search is still the cheapest edge available. Our New York hiring page covers how we run searches there.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is New York tech hiring growing or shrinking in 2026?

The money says growing: New York startups raised $17.7 billion in the first half of 2026 across 504 deals, close to 2025's full-year total, with Q2 the best capital quarter since 2021. But roughly 35 per cent of that funding goes to AI companies, and many funded startups are deliberately running leaner teams, so hiring demand is concentrated and spiky rather than broad. Funded companies hire hard for a few roles; the aggregate headlines flatter the rest of the market.

What do software engineers earn in New York in 2026?

Published figures put the average startup software engineer around $167,000 base, in a range of roughly $100,000 to $255,000, with senior engineers at large firms reaching a median total compensation near $240,000 once bonus and stock are included. On our own placement bands for non-FAANG startup and scale-up base salaries, mid-level engineers sit at $120k–$150k, seniors at $150k–$200k, and staff or principal engineers at $190k–$240k, with equity on top.

Which New York tech roles are hardest to hire in 2026?

AI and machine learning engineers with production experience are the fastest-growing and most contested, since New York is now the top US city for AI job postings. Beyond AI, the scarcity mirrors other hubs: senior and staff backend engineers, platform engineers, senior data engineers, and product managers with fintech or B2B SaaS depth. Junior and generalist roles remain crowded.

How does New York pay compare with London for tech roles?

New York is the highest-paying of the markets we cover. A senior engineer at a New York startup typically earns roughly double the London base for the equivalent role in dollar terms, before equity. For companies hiring in both cities, the practical implication is to budget each market on its own numbers rather than translating one from the other.
